What are some benefits and drawbacks of exclusive online therapy?
Having someone to talk to about the issues going on in our lives can be really powerful. However, the thought of accessing traditional therapy can be an overwhelming and daunting task. Mindful Solutions operates exclusively online. We have been fortunate enough to be able to offer services to clients in a way that really meets their needs and wants through web-based services.
There can be many different advantages to seeing your therapist online. One of the biggest things I hear from many clients is the convenience! You are able to have your session in the privacy of your own home, office, or location of your choice. You no longer have to drive when you are tired from your day or when there is inclement weather. Instead, you are able to relax in your own environment and not have to rush through traffic to get to and from your appointment. Privacy is on a different level, like not having to worry about who saw you entering or leaving the counselor's office. While there are still times that you may need to cancel, it is a lot easier to make appointments when a child gets sick or you are having car troubles. Sometimes this can even mean that you get up in the morning, grab your coffee, and sit in your PJs having your therapy session before work to feel prepared to take on the day! There are so many ways to make it flexible to fit your lifestyle.
There are also some disadvantages to consider. As the therapist, I can sometimes miss body language or other cues that we would normally have in the room together. I try to address this by asking more questions and further clarifying things with you. As the client, some disadvantages that may come up for you can also include having family or people around and having difficulty getting your own private space.
When trying to decide if web-based therapy is for you, there are some different things to consider. Do you have a space that is quiet and private that you would be able to have your session? Do you have strong and stable wifi? Are there physical components to your treatment that would make the therapist may miss by not being in the same room? Are you at risk for any harm to yourself or others? These are all very important things to consider when you are determining if web-based therapy is really the right fit for you.
